SUMMARY:11 September: Banned Book Club at Belsize Community Library
DESCRIPTION:\nBelsize Community Library’s book club looks at literature through the lens of censorship. \nEvery third Wednesday of the month\, at 7pm\, they meet to discuss a different banned book. Some have been banned by censors in the UK\, some by other governments or organisations. Why were these books banned? What effect did it have on the book’s reception and the wider society that banned it? What relevance does the book have to us? \nFor each session they invite a guest participant whose area of expertise will help us to appreciate the book – not just as a document of censorship\, but on its own literary merits. \nThis month\, as preparation for UK Banned Books Week (22nd-28th September)\, they’ve invited Index on Censorship to come and talk about literary censorship and their work defending free speech worldwide. \nThey’ll also be discussing Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale\, which has been both challenged and celebrated. It has been banned and restricted by some schools in the US\, but used as a A-level set text in the UK – and now is the basis for a very successful TV series. \n\n  \n

SUMMARY:23 September: Walled In
DESCRIPTION:Writers consider walls in literature and in our lives. \n30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall\, writers consider walls in literature and in our lives. With the resurgence of interest in the boundaries and borders of nations across the world\, is the symbol of that wall still potent in 2019? Do walls and censorship go hand-in-hand? And are there places where a wall could mean safety rather than segregation?\nWith David Hare and Ben Okri. Chaired by Samira Ahmed. \nDavid Hare is a playwright and film-maker. He has written over thirty plays which include Plenty\, Racing Demon and Skylight. His many screenplays include The Hours\, The Reader and the Worricker trilogy. \nBen Okri is a poet\, novelist\, essayist\, short story writer and playwright. His novels include the Booker Prize-winning The Famished Road\, the first in a trilogy\, and The Freedom Artist\, published in 2019. \nSamira Ahmed is a freelance journalist\, writer and broadcaster at the BBC\, where she has presented Radio 3’s Night Waves and Radio 4’s PM\, The World Tonight\, and Front Row. She presents the Intelligence Squared podcast ‘How I Found My Voice’. \nThis is a Banned Books Week event in partnership with the British Library\, Booksellers Association\, English PEN\, Free Word\, Hachette UK\, Index on Censorship\, Islington Council’s Library and Heritage Service\, Libraries Connected\, The Publishers Association and The Royal Society of Literature. \n

SUMMARY:26 September: Truly Uncensored? LGBTQ+ Young Adult Literature
DESCRIPTION:\nThe UK has no official censorship – but does that fact make us too complacent? \n\n\nAs part of Banned Book Week 2019\, we explore the challenges facing LGBTQ+ Young Adult literature with Dean Atta\, Fen Coles and Robin Stevens\, chaired by Erica Gillingham. What are the invisible barriers to expression and publication? And how do editors\, publishers\, teachers\, librarians\, parents or even authors contribute to unofficial censorship around LGBTQ+ issues? \nDean Atta was shortlisted for the Polari First Book Prize for his debut poetry collection\, I Am Nobody’s Nigger. He was named as one of the most influential LGBT people in the UK by the Independent on Sunday. The Black Flamingo is his debut novel\, published by Hodder Children’s Books in August 2019. \nFen Coles is a co-director at Letterbox Library\, a 36-year-old\, not-for-profit children’s booksellers specialising in equality\, diversity and inclusion. She also co-runs the Little Rebels Award for Radical Children’s Fiction. Fen has a PhD (2005) and an MA (1995) in Interdisciplinary Women’s Studies from the University of Warwick. Her PhD was in ‘The Representations of Lesbians in American Horror Film’. \nErica Gillingham is an academic\, writer\, and expert in LGBTQ+ children’s and young adult literature. She is currently a bookseller at Gay’s the Word\, the oldest LGBT bookshop in the UK\, and the Books Editor for DIVA magazine. Her PhD research was conducted at the National Centre for Research in Children’s Literature at the University of Roehampton where her thesis examined lesbian love stories in young adult literature and comics. \nRobin Stevens is the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize-winning author of the Murder Most Unladylike Mysteries. Her schoolgirl detective duo\, Daisy Wells and Hazel Wong\, have won her legions of dedicated fans. In the seventh mystery\, Death in the Spotlight\, Daisy came out as gay and Robin has received overwhelming support for her sensitive and inclusive portrayal of Daisy’s journey since the first book. Top Marks for Murder is the eighth mystery\, published by Puffin in August 2019. \n\n
